On the horseback to what was once Europe’s highest located monastery
The day starts early with a short trip from the hotel to the mountain village of Latali where horses are waiting to take everybody up on the Mukheri mountain at 2700 meters. During the middle ages what was considered to be Europe’s highest located monastery was placed on this very mountain. Here tens of monks lived, during the winter often with no contact with the outside world. From where the monastery once was there is a splendid view towards the highest peaks of the Caucasus, some of them more than 5000 meters high. On a lucky day, you may also see Europe’s highest mountain Elbrus from here. It is located about 40 km away, on the Russian side of the border. Some years ago a church was rebuilt on the top of the mountain and there are plans to restore the monastery as well. Around the monastery area there are some of the best pasture lands when the snow has shrinked upwards in the mountain world. A nice picnic is enjoyed under open sky before it is time to return to Latali and the hotel.
