Around in Georgia
This round trip tries to show a beautiful selection of Georgia’s incredible diversity.
On the way to Tbilisi an exciting stop is at the Gelati monastery outside Georgia’s second largest city, Kutaisi. From the 12th century and later, the Gelati monastery was one of Georgia’s spiritual and cultural centres. In 1994 the monastery, together with the Bagrati Cathedral in Kutaisi was included on the UNESCOs World Heritage List.
Two days are dedicated to Georgia’s capital Tbilisi and one day to Georgia’s former capital Mtskheta as well as the mountain village of Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) and the Georgian military highway (see the description of the trip Tbilisi and Kazbegi)
On the fifth and the sixth day, the trip goes eastwards to the region of Kakheti and the wine districts there. This is where the well-known wines like Saperavi, Kindzmarauli, Tsinadali and Mukuzani. Originate Winetasting is a part of the trip. The stay in Kakheti also includes the beautiful little town of Sighnaghi and the impressive David-Gareja cave monastery right on the border with Azerbaijan.
From Kakheti in the east, the trip goes westwards in the direction of the Black Sea. On the way a longer stop is made in the Borjomi National park. The park carries the name of the famous mineral water Borjomi, and it is in this area that most of the historical Georgians SPA resorts are located. South of Borjomi is the fascinating Vardzia cave monastery complex which was built during the ruling period of Georgia’s great queen Tamar from year 1185 and onwards. The complex once included 6 000 dwellings spread on 13 floors. About 300 of these dwellings have survived war and natural disasters and can be seen today.
The final leg of this round trip is dedicated to Georgia’s most popular seaside resort; Batumi by the Black Sea (see description of the trip to Batumi)
