  • Mestia across the Guli pass (10 – 12 hours)

This hike starts at the hotel and passes the village of Mazeri on the way upwards towards the remains of what was once the mountain village of Guli and the mountain church that is located there. The trail continues upwards and turns gradually northwards against the impressive southern Ushba summit which comes closer all the time. The trail goes on into a valley where a tongue of the glacier comes down from Ushba. Right before the last shepherd’s hut the trail takes a little turn southeast and then climbs steeply until you see, and then get on the Guli pass at 2 950 metres. This is the closest regular hikers get to „the king of the mountains of the Caucasus”. When you get across the pass, the path goes relatively straight downwards towards the Inguri valley. The trail hits the car road which you can follow to Mestia by taking it eastwards. It is possible to stay overnight or to be picked up in Mestia. If you wish to walk back to the hotel the same day, then this is possible if you are in good physical shape. Here you must go westwards, not eastwards when you hit the car road. Follow the car road westwards parallell to the Inguri river until you get to the Dolra valley where you go northwards up the valley until you reach the hotel. The company of an experienced local mountain guide is highly recommended. A mountain guide can be ordered through the hotel – preferably at the latest, 1 day in advance.
