The Ushba Glacier (6 – 7 hours)
The hike begins at the hotel, crosses the Dolra river and continues on the western side of Dolra up the valley across beautiful meadows and pastures. A little church is passed before Dolra again is crossed. The wood becomes denser and the climb steeper. We possibly meet a Georgian border guard who spends the night in a hammock in the forest around ten kilometres from the mountain border with Russia. It is important to bring your passport as this might be checked here. The hike continues up a steep hill towards a beautiful waterfall. If the weather is good the hiking continues towards a plateau at around 2 500 meter with a beautiful meadow. Here there is a beautiful view towards the twin-peaks of Ushba of 4 690 and 4 710 metres. The mountain hike ends at 2 700 metres where we meet the glacier which comes down from the Ushba peaks. If visibility is good, it might be possible to see Mount Shelda (4 368 m) on the Georgian-Russian border in the north, the Ushba peaks in the west and the top of Mount Mazeri (4 010 m) in the south. We return downwards the same way as we came. The trail is marked in red and white, but the company of an experienced local mountain guide is highly recommended. A mountain guide can be ordered through the hotel – preferably at the latest 1 day in advance.
